Basic Science Lecture: Mitotherapeutics for Neurodegeneration - Ronald L. Davis, PhD

Neuronal mitochondria become defective in nearly all neurological and psychiatric disorders. In some genetic forms of neurodegenerative diseases, a hit to mitochondria is the precipitating factor for the disease. In others, mitochondrial deficits are at minimum, a major part of the neuropathology. Thus, fashioning effective mitotherapeutics becomes critical for the treatment of these diseases, either alone or for combinational therapy. Dr. Ronald L. Davis will discuss recent progress using a novel high content screening platform to identify small molecules that boost aspects of mitochondrial dynamics and function and provide protection to the insults associated with neurodegenerative disease in vitro and in vivo.
