Deciphering the Delirium Puzzle: Diagnosis and Management

Delirium is an acute decline in cognitive function and attention. It occurs in up to 50% of patients in ICU and 60% of residents in long-term care facilities and post-acute settings. Delirium is increasingly recognized as an important risk factor and possible trigger for many brain aging disorders that affect memory, movement, and mood. Delirium is a life-threatening medical emergency until proven otherwise. This presentation includes: (1) how to identify delirium in clinical settings; (2) screening and assessment techniques; (3) options for pharmacologic intervention; and (4) how to reduce delirium in healthcare settings.
