Joshua W. Knowles – MD, PhD
Associate Professor of Medicine (Cardiovascular Medicine)
Dr. Knowles is a physician-scientist at Stanford. He did his MD-PhD at UNC with Nobuyo Maeda and Oliver Smithies and Internal Medicine residency and Fellowship at Stanford primarily mentored by Tom Quertermous. He joined the faculty at Stanford in 2014. He is active clinically and directs the lipid clinic within the Stanford Center for Inherited Cardiovascular Disease. The balance of his time is spent on translational research and the fundamental theme of work in his lab is the application of genetics to improve human health. He views this as a continuum from Discovery to the development of Model Systems to Clinical Translation to larger Public Health efforts. Most of his work centers on genetic mechanisms of cardiometabolic risk factors such as insulin resistance and hyperlipidemia. His lab has published close to 200 papers (h index ~65, i10 index ~140) with research projects funded by the NIH, AHA, ADA and the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation. He also believes in the necessity of training the next generation of scientists to tackle our most pressing health issues and is the director of the Cardiovascular Medicine Fellowship program and is proud that over 80% of the trainees have received mentored training awards during his tenure as program director.
