Beyond the injured spinal cord: Spinal cord injury as a systemic disease
While it is well known that spinal cord injury (SCI) causes motor and sensory deficits, it is often less well-recognized that SCI also causes systemic organ pathology and metabolic dysfunction. In our lab, we are focused on understanding the metabolic consequences of SCI, with an emphasis on hepatic and adipose pathology, insulin resistance and dyslipidemia. Data will be presented on the metabolic problems individuals with SCI face and how we are using animal models to study mechanisms and search for therapeutic targets.
