Organization of visual information destined for perception

Only a tiny fraction of visual information processed by the brain will ever reach sensory awareness. This is surprising given that ~50% of primate cortex is devoted to vision. Using a combination of electrophysiology, optogenetics and behavioral measures, my research is focused on uncovering the essential brain circuits and computational transformations required for sensory information to flow through to become perceivable. The ultimate goal is to design neuroprosthetic interventions that speak the brain’s native language to restore vision (and other senses) lost due to disease or accident.
