About this Event
Neurosensory Center, 1st Floor
Join Avindra Nath, MD, Chief, Section for Infections of the Nervous System, NIH, as he discuses "Retroviral elements in pathogenesis and as therapeutic targets in ALS."
Dr. Nath’s research is focused on the clinical manifestations, pathophysiology and treatment of emerging neurological infections with a focus on HIV infection and endogenous retroviruses. His laboratory studies the role of retroviral elements in the pathophysiology of neurodegenerative diseases. They have shown how defective viral sequences can persist in the brain, how their expression is regulated and how viral proteins can cause neurotoxicity and neuro-glial dysfunction. He received the Pioneer in NeuroVirology Award from the International Society of NeuroVirology and served as its President. He received the Wybran award from the Society of Neuroimmune Pharmacology for contributions to Neurovirology. He is an elected member of the Association of American Physicians and American Association for the Advancement of Science.
